Dr Faustus Essay
Look back at the two answers that you produced for assignment one, and read carefully through your tutors comments. Remember to check that your tutor has written on your (PT3) form as well as the comments in the margins. You should choose one of your answers to rework. Your answer to this part of the assignment will need to be produced in two stages. First you will need to present the original versions the answer that you have chosen to rework. You should include your tutor made on this answer. Secondly, you should produce a new draft of your answer, drawing on your tutors comments. Original version with comments. When we begin to read the first three verses of this passage we realize that the daemon Mephistopheles is actually referring to the Old man. This verse explains to us that the old manââ¬â¢s faith in God is so strong that Mephistopheles cannot touch his soul. So he tries to afflict his body with pains, but the Old manââ¬â¢s body is of little worth. The Old manââ¬â¢s soul is so beautiful whereas Doctor Faustusââ¬â¢s soul is black due to making a pact with the devil. (Comment-Paul Dixon)Yes, well noted. Youââ¬â¢ve put these first lines of the extract nicely into context here, and your interpretation of them is very good. Do you think the fact that Mephistopheles has ââ¬Ëtouchedââ¬â¢ Faustusââ¬â¢s soul contributes to the portrayal of him as a tragic hero? Mephistopheles calls forth a daemon and brings forth Helen of Troy, apparently the most beautiful woman to ever be desired. Helen is famous for her abduction by Paris which led to the Greeks starting a war over her which was called the Trojan War. Faustus has just witnessed in front of him Helen of Troy. He says the verse: ââ¬Å"Whose sweet embracingââ¬â¢s may extinguish clean/ These thoughts that do dissuade me from my vow. â⬠(Oââ¬â¢Connor, 2003, pp. 101-103) In my opinion he says this to divert his attention elsewhere as he doesnââ¬â¢t want to be reminded of his eternal damnation which soon awaits him. When Faustus begins to talk about Helen of Troy we are brought into reverie. We are struck by the poetry of Marloweââ¬â¢s text. The most famous quote of Doctor Faustus is: ââ¬Å"Was this the face that launched a thousand ships/ And burnt the topless towers of Ilium? (Doctor Faustus, the A text, J. Oââ¬â¢Connor (2003) P. 101-103) This piece of text is quite interesting as it shows Faustus emotions of infatuation by Helen of Troy. ââ¬Å"Her lips suck forth my soulâ⬠: this verse explains the intensity of the besotted first kiss. By doing this Faustus fears that Helen has stolen his soul which could make him immortal. From lines 91-95 in the passage there is clearly an iambic pentameter being played here but on the third and fourth line there is blank verses. Marlowe does this to achieve a dramatic effect on the audience. Faustus seems to give up all hope on eternal paradise. (comment-Paul Dixon) The whole extract is written in blank verse, which is unrhymed iambic pentameter (see Book 1, p. 35). The lines you refer to, lines 93 and 94, break the rhythm of the regular iambic pentameter for dramatic effect. Faustus says ââ¬Å"I will be Parisâ⬠(Doctor Faustus, the A text, J. Oââ¬â¢Connor (2003) P. 101-103) itââ¬â¢s very hard for the reader not to pity him as he desperately wants to feel like a hero in love. Faustus seems to waste his intelligence on delusions of great importance. The lines ââ¬Å"O, thou art fairer than the evening air/ Clad in the beauty of a thousand starsâ⬠are a couplet; this is a pair of successive lines of verse especially a pair that are the same length. (comment -Paul Dixon) This is potentially a good point, but you need to be more specific about how these lines create this effect. See the note to line 94 at the bottom of p. 102 of the set text. Doctor Faustus seems to have constant battles with his own head therefore making the play somewhat a psychological tragedy. Doctor Faustusââ¬Ës own imperfections lead him to make the wrong decisions and judgments. Faustusââ¬â¢s suffering was all a result of self-inflicted pain therefore making him a tragic hero and the audience sympathizing with him. (Comment-Paul Dixon) Good summary, but it would be even more effective if you had been a little more explicit about how some of the lines youââ¬â¢ve highlighted above contribute to the portrayal of Faustus as a tragic hero. Assesment Summary Comments- At the same time, you could be a bit more specific about how some of the passages that you highlight contribute to the portrayal of Faustus as a tragic hero. I notice that you have drawn on an online source for several of your ideas in interpreting the extract. You can use and refer to such sources when writing your assignments, but I would advise you to keep this to a minimum. One of the main things you are being assessed on in AA100 is your knowledge and understanding of the AA100 study materials, so it will always be best to ely on them mostly (as you have in Part 1). In this case more reliance on the chapter by Anita Pacheco on Doctor Faustus in Book 1 might have helped you to clear up some misunderstanding about blank verse and iambic pentameter. Having said that, you have evidently also made use of the notes in the set text of the play in interpreting and contextualizing the extract. More reference to the module materials here would have raised your grade to a Pass 2, but I think the analysis you have done deserves a mark not too far off.

Looking the Part: What to Wear to Your College Interview
There are myriad circumstances in your life where you may have to dress for a certain role. You might be on a sports team, in which you wear your jersey the day of an important game. Maybe youââ¬â¢re having dinner with your grandparents so you put on some clean, ironed pants and a nice shirt. Or maybe youââ¬â¢re all dolled up and headed to the prom. Different circumstances call for different attire, and when you near the end of your high school career, youââ¬â¢ll enter new territory in this regard. There will be special events, graduation and graduation parties, and of course, college interviews. Preparing for interviews can be stressful. You are probably busy thinking about how to answer possible interview questions, planning how youââ¬â¢ll frame your unique experiences and communicate who you really are. You might be so busy thinking about what youââ¬â¢ll say and talk about during the interview that you donââ¬â¢t spend much time anticipating what youââ¬â¢ll wear to the actual interview. It can be hard to decide what to wear to a college interview, especially if youââ¬â¢ve never interviewed for something similar. In this post, weââ¬â¢ll outline how you can play the part so that you make a positive first impression and show that you are serious about your college ambitions. Because many students spend time stressing about how to dress for interviews, some colleges now specify the appropriate attire. If you interview confirmation specifically states that you may dress casually, you should do so, assuming that you arenââ¬â¢t wearing any ripped clothing or inappropriate logos. But if your interview confirmation specifics business casual or doesnââ¬â¢t offer any insight at all, keep reading. With our top tips for how to dress and prepare yourself outwardly for the college interview, youââ¬â¢ll be able to let your mouth do the talking, not any flaws or missteps in your appearance.à You will need to choose clothes that look business appropriate. These are the kinds of things you would wear to a formal class presentation if you wanted to make a really positive impression. Your clothing should be modest and simple, but clean and crisp. A good general rules of thumb is, if you wouldnââ¬â¢t wear it to a family dinner with your grandfather, donââ¬â¢t wear it to an interview. What does this entail exactly? You donââ¬â¢t need a full suit or anything, but you should at least look clean and put-together. Try to avoid any large brand logos on your clothing and certainly avoid jeans or t-shirts. If youââ¬â¢re a boy, you should consider wearing dress pants or khaki pants paired with a collared shirt. Be sure to tuck your shirt in and wear a belt so that your pants fit snugly and no undergarments are visible. If youââ¬â¢re a girl, you should consider wearing dress pants or a knee-length skirt or dress. Pair these with a simple blouse or business appropriate sweater. Be sure that none of your undergarments are visible through your clothes.à Your shoes should be appropriate and polished. You should not wear any sneakers, platforms, or high heels over 3â⬠. Make sure that your shoes are not exceptionally scuffed or worn. If you donââ¬â¢t already have a pair of nice, professional shoes, now is the time to invest in a pair. You will need them beyond the interview for jobs and other events in college.à Be sure to leave most of your fashion accessories at home or in the car. You should not wear or bring any sunglasses or hats to the interview. These types of accessories are more likely to distract attention from what you have to say. The same is true of piercings. If possible you should remove all visible piercings except for earrings. If you do wear earrings, or any other jewelry, it should be modest and not distracting. Hopefully this goes without saying, but you donââ¬â¢t want to show up for the interview with last nightââ¬â¢s pizza on your chin or the stench of yesterdayââ¬â¢s workout lingering under your arms. Be mindful of arriving for the interview having recently showered, brushed your teeth, and used deodorant. This shows that you have planned ahead and taken it seriously. Beyond that, be careful not to apply too much perfume or cologne before your interview. For people who are not used to the smell, it can be overpowering and/or unpleasant. Some people are even allergic to strong perfumes. If you do choose to wear perfume or cologne, just a small amount will suffice. Again, your outward appearance should convey that you are taking the interview seriously and are respectful of the process. You should look composed, but not over-the-top. For girls, makeup should be natural and light. Donââ¬â¢t wear bright lipsticks, eyeshadows, or anything else that might distract from what you have to say.à For boys, make sure to shave or trim your facial hair. Having a beard or a mustache is of course fine, but it should be well-kept. Remember that your facial hair is an indication of your care and preparation. Even if you normally wear it ungroomed, you should trim and groom for this occasion. Estimating your chance of getting into a college is not easy in todayââ¬â¢s competitive environment. Thankfully, with our state-of-the-art software and data, we can analyze your academic and extracurricular profile and estimate your chances. Make sure to iron your clothes before the interview. Even completely appropriate attire will appear unprofessional if you arrive with it wrinkled. If you are traveling from afar and wonââ¬â¢t have the opportunity to change into your interview clothes after you arrive, be sure to bring a wrinkle release spray. Practice using it at home. Mist your clothes from a distance, smooth out wrinkles with your hands, and allow the spray to dry. Also think about small impressions, such as the watch or the socks that youââ¬â¢re wearing. If they donââ¬â¢t fit the part, leave them at home. Top it all off with a conservative hairstyle. Thereââ¬â¢s no need for mohawks or wild colors for this event. Remember, again, that you want the focus to be on you and what you have to say, not on what youââ¬â¢re wearing or how youââ¬â¢ve done your hair. Despite wearing clothes that are outside of your normal wardrobe, try to feel comfortable in what you choose for the interview. Make sure that everything fits comfortably so that you wonââ¬â¢t be adjusting your clothing or distracted by it during the interview. Also, try to stay true to yourself even if youââ¬â¢re wearing something out of the ordinary. There are plenty of methods to incorporate your own sense of style in subtle ways that wonââ¬â¢t overpower the rest of your image. A small piece of jewelry, a scarf, or cufflinks are some ideas.à Remember, this is a college interview and your interviewers expect a high school student to walk in the door. They are not looking for a lawyer or a CEO. There is no need for a complete three-piece suit unless thatââ¬â¢s what makes you feel most comfortable. Similarly, if you donââ¬â¢t normally wear high heels, today is not the day to try them out for the first time. Your interview attire should be something that makes you feel comfortable and composed while conveying that you take the process seriously and are respectful of the institution and the interviewers. Thereââ¬â¢s no need to spend lots of money on expensive clothing. A few polished staples that you can reuse for other events will do just fine. Finally, donââ¬â¢t forget that no matter what you choose to wear, it wonââ¬â¢t have any impact if you canââ¬â¢t complete the image by backing it up through your own actions. Your body language is just as important a part of your outward appearance as anything youââ¬â¢re wearing. When you walk into the interview, even if you are feeling nervous, put a smile on your face, make eye contact, and shake hands with a firm grip. As you do so, introduce yourself and thank your interviewer(s) for having with you. At the end of the interview, do the same and thank the interviewer(s) for their time. Tell them that youââ¬â¢ve enjoyed speaking with them and look forward to exploring your options at their institution. This advice might seem overwhelming if you feel like you donââ¬â¢t look the part of the aspiring college student. Maybe you have some visible tattoos or piercings that canââ¬â¢t be removed. Maybe your wild hairstyle or color canââ¬â¢t be changed, or perhaps you just canââ¬â¢t get through the interview without your fluorescent pink plaid lucky socks. If this is the case for you, donââ¬â¢t worry; this isnââ¬â¢t the end of the world. If there is a glaringly obvious component to your appearance that seems unusual or even out of place, relax. You wonââ¬â¢t be the first interviewee to present an unusual image. Rather than allowing it to be the elephant in the room, bring it up during the interview as a talking point. The interview is meant to get to know you better as a candidate and what better way than discussing how your appearance reflects who you are? Be confident in yourself and offer some insight so that the interview committee isnââ¬â¢t left wondering. à à College interviews can be a stressful time, especially if youââ¬â¢re about to have your first one. Remember that if you prepare ahead, remain true to yourself, and go into the interview with confidence, you will put your best foot forward. There are few opportunities in life where you get to talk so much about yourself, and it can feel awkward at first, but with some practice and a little reminder to be yourself, the interview process can be comfortable and even fun. If you are nearing college interview time and you need some more help preparing, whether itââ¬â¢s choosing your attire or preparing your talking points, consider our ââ¬â¢s Mentorship Program , which provides practical advice on topics from high school activities and college applications to career aspirations, all from successful college students who have been in your shoes.

Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young Girl Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young Girl - Essay Example Anne Frank is a mundane teenager going through the happenings, events, and feelings that all teenagers go through, yet she is going through them while Amsterdam, Holland is being involved in the Holocaust. The main concept of the journal, however, is Anne keeping track of everything that she does go through while her family is in hiding. She makes notes of the changes that she is going through as a teenager, and how she believes that these changes are separating her from her family ââ¬â mentally and emotionally. As aforementioned, the journal had been intended as a release for a teenager going through everyday strife, confusion, and emotions that she does not understand. Unfortunately, as the effects of the Holocaust nears Anneââ¬â¢s home in Holland, her journal entries become tainted by the events of the war and of the persecution of the Jews. Anne confides into her journal the worries that she has for the people that she is close to ââ¬â she knows that many of them have been taken to concentration camps, and she fears for the day that her family is taken in. She becomes overly emotional when she talks about the different rights that were taken away from her, the rights that constituted her as a teenager. She was no longer allowed to ride her bike during certain times, and she had to wear a yellow star on her clothes, so that the soldiers would know if she was breaking any of the rules laid down for the Jews. Her journal entries become more disconcerted as things worsen for her family and the other families that they are in hiding with. It is clear that Anne feels their time in hiding is coming to a close. The journal ends as they are still in hiding; when the soldiers find them, Anne is unable to take her journal with her to the concentration camp. She dies soon before her release from the camp, so she was unable to add more to her journal. Aside from the fact that the storyââ¬â¢s content was depressing and disturbing in regards to the Holocaust

Account for changes, ststus and expectations of working class women in Essay
Account for changes, ststus and expectations of working class women in victorian period (england only) - Essay Example Women were beginning to question their allotted place in society as more and more opportunities opened for them in the urban centers of the country, providing them with a means of supporting themselves and freeing themselves from the yoke of male domination. However, at the same time, these positions were not the equal rights positions of modern times, so it was often difficult to determine whether one wanted to sacrifice freedom for comfort or comfort for freedom. Rarely was it possible to attain both and often it was found, too late, that it was possible to attain neither. The Victorian periodââ¬â¢s characterization as a time of change is appropriate, particularly when taken in context with the changes occurring in the lives of women. Thanks to advances in technology and a general shift toward the cities, womenââ¬â¢s spheres were fundamentally shifted in the home, in society and in work and they became more and more recognized as a force to contend with in the nationââ¬â¢s legislative process. The difficulties faced by women can be traced somewhat through literature, such as George Eliotââ¬â¢s Daniel Deronda (1876). A little knowledge about the author is itself an education in the struggle of women to accomplish their goals. Although the book is published under a male name as the only means by which it could possibly gain the attention of a publisher, the author was actually female, a woman named Mary Ann Evans. This begins to illustrate the inability of women to control their own careers or destinies as well as their struggles to break these bounds. In the Victorian era, the barriers of the class system rigidly defined the role of a woman. At the time women belonged to four distinct classes: nobility and gentry, middle-class, upper working-class, and lower working-class (Levine-Clark, 1991). These women each had their own specific standards and roles within society.

The usage of derivative instruments Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
The usage of derivative instruments - Essay Example The paper tells that in the present day context, the degree of competition was observed to be witnessing a significant rise along with the environment of business undergoing a constant alteration. The constant alterations have been giving rise to unforeseen situations that calls for effectual management with respect to the companies as well as banks. Therefore, it can be inferred that in relation to the mentioned context, it becomes important for the business enterprises to effectually manage the unforeseen risks from beforehand. It was identified in this regard that the most widely used financing strategies to overcome the challenges raised by business risks are the use of financial derivatives. Examples of financial derivatives used in the current risk management strategies are options and futures, and forward contracts. Options are defined as ââ¬Å"the right and not the obligation to buy or sell something on a specified date at a specified priceâ⬠. On the similar context, fu tures and forward contracts are also considered as significant risk management tools that are based on the value of fundamental assets. However, these techniques are subject to various factors such as credit rates, interest rates, currency fluctuations and other financial aspects which should be taken into consideration prior to the execution of this strategy. A derivative has been defined as an agreement that is found to take place among a buyer as well as a seller and gets initiated on the current date with regard to a particular transaction that is expected to be realised on a future date or time. For example, the tr

Microbiology Exam Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Microbiology Exam - Essay Example Some viruses (animal viruses and bacteriophages) have the capsid encased in an envelope. In addition they are non-membraneous and cannot yield energy. They are also devoid of metabolic enzymes and ribosomes that form the sites for protein biosynthesis. Moreover, they need host cells to replicate. Viruses are transmitted via salivary drops, respiratory fluids, sexual contact, fecal-oral especially in case of contaminated food, animal vectors and via blood. Viroids- Comprise of single-stranded and circular RNA which is noncoding and infect plants. As compared to viruses their genome is much smaller, are protein non-coding, and unlike viruses some possess ribozyme activity. They initiate infection in plants via chloroplast or nuclear replication and they are conveyed in cells via plasmodesmata. Prions- Infectious agents that solely comprise of a protein whose form is misfolded. This is a distinguishing feature as they lack nucleic acids i.e. RNA/DNA. These potent agents means of propagat ion is via inducing folded proteins in healthy organisms to change (misfold) and assume the form of the prion; these have the ability to cause disease. The resultant stable structure causes cell death and tissue damage (Tortora, Funke & Case, 2010). 2. How can viruses lead to cancer? Be sure to use specific examples (e.g. virus name and the cancer it causes) to illustrate your points. Viral transformation mediated via viral genes results to uncontrolled cell growth with contact inhibition loss, tumor formation as well as chromosomal aberrations. In addition viral oncogenes that transform normal cells into malignant cells are transmitted by viruses. Viruses also inactivate the tumor suppressor proteins. The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the causative agent for cervical cancer and it integrates in the hostââ¬â¢s genome and suppresses the expression E2 viral gene which represses the expression of viral oncoproteins E7 and E6. E6 has a high binding affinity for p53(tumor suppressor gene) and triggers its degradation and E7 binds to retinoblastoma(Rb). Rb and p53 are tumor suppressor proteins. This results to apoptosis inhibition and dysregulation of cell growth. E6 possesses the ability to trigger telomerase activity as well as immortalizing cells. E7 also triggers abnormal centriole biosynthesis as well as aneuploidy during the initial oncogenic process. Hence, E7 and E6 are synergistic in transforming normal cells to a state of malignancy. However, there is a genetic predisposition to the progression of cervical cancer. Moreover, acute immunosuppression heightens the propensity of cervical dysplasia and subsequent cancer progression (Damania, 2006). 3. You are growing Bacillus subtilis in nine 16,000-liter fermenters to produce enzymes for industrial use. The Bacillus cultures had been growing for 2 days when the cells in one of the fermenters lysed. Explain what happened in this fermenter. This is likely to be a case of bacteriophage contamination. Bacterio phages are a class of viruses that infect bacteria. Upon infecting bacterial cultures, they cause serious problems and this entails complete loss of bioproducts; in this respect enzymes and their subsequent proliferation in the plant (to other fermentors). This results to culture lysis and unless it is contained, the problem is bound to reoccur even after stringent sterilization of equipment. Decontamination is much difficult in such a large scale fermentor. It is has been proven that phage propagation in such a bioreactor can easily spread

Men as Contemporary Shopping Spectacles in London Essay
Men as Contemporary Shopping Spectacles in London - Essay Example London's Covent Garden market surfaces as a prime example of a shopping spectacle for men incorporating all pleasures of consumption from packaging, presentation and buying. American Classics is a store located in the area which caters only to men and their accessories in the form of international American type clothing. The layout of the store is designed to inform and incite men into consumption and also as spectacles to be gazed at. Men are emerging everywhere as hungry predators for all things aesthetic. They are even making a go for cosmetics and beauty products like never before. They even make their own choices rather than depend on their partners to do the obvious. They seem to be better informed than most women these days. Men are gradually becoming aware of their bodies and their looks which is what gives proof for today's metro sexual male; shaving creams, colognes, soaps, clothes, shoes, hair and skin products being the order of the day. Gadgets and gizmos follow close by . These products depended on varied ideas to be marketed which gave consumption and masculinity a massive push towards an upheaval in the British society. It soon led to consumer identities being arranged and expanded at a spiraling recourse towards the male species. Figure 1.Men's Perfumes are Quite the Rage http://www.strawberrynet.com/images/products/00763331005.jpgwww.strawberrynet.com The long held assumption that consumption is a feminine venture has been proved wrong by these men centric malls and retail stores. Author Christopher Breward posits that male fashion in Britain gave a creative lend and space for masculine innovation during the late- Victorian era, in his book, The Hidden Consumer: Masculinities, Fashion and City Life. Hence, this process put men as consumers at the forefront of modernization at the beginning of the twentieth century itself. This also invalidates the idea that Englishmen of the late Victorian times agreed with the concept of a "Great Masculine Renunciation" (Breward 1) of style and fashion as many have suggested. Most material evidence of increasing male fashion consciousness are found in stores, malls, novels, films, photographs, magazines, trade directories etc. Breward's book also provides evidence that male fashion ability was conspicuous from the Victorian times itself, with these very proofs he provides in the form photographs and diaries. Clothing and fashion accessories were available to men even then but since the dominant wisdom was patriarchal, the opposite has been proved. By the help of those photographs and even songs, he posits to examine how many London and Manchester working class gangs utilized fashion to pose different from the rest of the gangs
